Microsoft Outlook is an email client that is widely associated with the Microsoft Office suite of applications. Typically Outlook allows you to utilize its internal calendar, task manager, meeting organizer, notes section and journal to take charge of your life. Many large corporations use this in conjunction with Microsoft Exchange Server so that all employees have an email account while allowing them to sync with mobile devices. Believe it or not, Outlook was available in the MS-DOS days and has grown exponentially since then.

Outlook is now available as a standalone application just like AOL, Hotmail or Gmail.

Why Outlook?

Outlook has many of the same features as your traditional email clients, but there are also some extended features that those clients do not have. For example, you have the ability to view, edit and share Microsoft Office documents online using Microsoft Office Online. You can also create other email aliases under your Outlook email account; therefore, you have additional email addresses that link to your main account. You can set up time-based rules for all emails so that they automatically delete after a certain amount of time so as to not accumulate a ton of unnecessary clutter.

Outlook allows you to connect with others from other applications. You can connect to your LinkedIn account, Twitter account, Google account and Skype Account from Outlook utilizing the social connector application, which gives you the ability to have all of your connections in one centralized location.

One of the best-known features of Outlook is its lack of ads. Most email clients produce ads all over your web browser based on the content in your email. Therefore, you know a screen scrape is being done to see what interests you to see what ads should be produced, this is somewhat disturbing. Outlook does NOT do this!

About the Outlook App

The Outlook app is compatible with iOS, Android and Windows devices. The app allows you to manage your email account as we discussed above as well as calendar functions, contacts and files. All of this is done within the single application as opposed to jumping from one to another.

A few of the most important features that Outlook offers are a unified inbox so that you can consolidate email accounts into one location. Therefore, if you have a Gmail account or a Yahoo account you will be able to sync all of those together and manage them from on centralized location. Smartphones have new multi-touch capabilities making it easier to utilize finger gestures for functions; therefore, swiping of email messages will allow you to simply delete emails or archive them for later use. One of the neat features that Outlook provides is the ability to have emails resent to your inbox at a later date. A built-in scheduling feature will allow you to set the time for items such as this. Next, as far as the calendar function is concerned, you can share your calendar with other contacts, easily schedule meetings or appointments, and view your calendar to see what is on your agenda for the day. Outlook provides you with a ‘Focused’ Inbox if you like, so that you can task certain emails as priorities. Those emails will be the only items that show up in that Focused Inbox screen. This is an extremely neat feature for those that are overwhelmed with busy schedules and tend to forget those ever-important emails! Last, it is very easy to share attachments via One Drive, Dropbox and Google Drive. The process Outlook has set up is seamless making it much faster to exchange large files between users.

There are a number of other great features about the app, but these are the most raved about items that will get your attention.

Creating an Outlook.com Email Account for Free

Now it is time to get started! Creating a new Outlook email account is simple. First, go to the URL: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-com and click on ‘Sign Up’. You will be presented with a form to enter your name, a username (that will be used as your email address), a password, Country/region, birthdate, gender and some security question for protecting your information (a phone number and an alternate email address).

Once you have done all of this, enter the captcha code, and click ‘Create Account’. You will then be redirected to your new Inbox. It is as easy and as simple as that. It takes less than a minute to get up and going!

Obviously, you can also shift to Outlook from previous email clients. Shifting to Outlook from an existing email client is just as easy. You will follow the steps from above, but after you sign in, you will need to run the import wizard to get all of your data. It will migrate all of emails and contacts to your new Outlook email Inbox and Contacts list, but you will also be able to set up the account so that all incoming messages from that point forward will be forwarded to your new Outlook account.

Below I will describe how you can download the app for your device, but you can always sign in to your account from a web browser utilizing the URL: https://login.live.com.

Note – Microsoft earlier used to call its email service as Live.com, and even as Hotmail.com. But now, it’s only the Live.com which is being used.

Below I will describe how you can download the app for your device, but you can always sign in to your account from a web browser utilizing the URL: https://login.live.com.

Adding the App to Your Deviceoutlook-mobile-apps

Next is the fun part of adding the application to your device. It does not do you any good to set up the account or switch to Outlook.com if you are not going to utilize all assets and functions, so you need to download the app for your device.

For Android devices, you will need to go to GooglePlay and find the Microsoft Outlook application. For Apple devices you will need to find the Microsoft Outlook application in iTunes. A version is also offered for Windows 10 phones. All applications run the exact same, it is an easy set up once you download the app.

For the Android devices, once the app is downloaded you will tap ‘Get Started’ and then select the account you want to add and sign in using your username and password from above. Use this exact same process for Apple devices. For Windows devices, you will click on ‘Start’, ‘Settings’ and then ‘Emails & Accounts’. Next you will add an account with Outlook as the type or Windows Live on some earlier phones. You will use the username and password from above to activate the account.

Outlook Sign in Login page

Since you have created a new account, so you are already login. If you wish to keep a bookmark of the login page then here is the link.

You can keep this link bookmarked in your browser, of course if you are accessing Outlook through its official website. But, in the case of application, you don’t need to remember any place. Just hit the app button and it will be running on your screen.

That’s it! It’s as simple as that!

Conclusion

Microsoft has really outdone themselves this time. Outlook is a fantastic standalone email client that is much more flexible than other standalone clients. Many of us will get much more use out of this client because of that flexibility and the features it has to offer.
